Everything people usually ask before their first acupuncture appointment.
Does acupuncture hurt?
The needles are very fine, far thinner than a needle used for an injection. Most people feel a light tingle, warmth or a dull ache as a needle goes in, and many find treatment deeply relaxing.
Is acupuncture safe?
I use single-use, sterile needles and, as a member of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC), I follow its codes of safe practice and professional conduct. I will ask about your health and any medication at your first appointment so treatment can be adapted to you.
What happens at the first appointment?
Your first appointment lasts up to 90 minutes. We talk through your health history, lifestyle and what you would like help with. I may take your pulse and look at your tongue, which are traditional parts of a Chinese medicine assessment, and then give your first treatment.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on you and what you are coming for. I will suggest a plan after your first treatment and we will review it together as we go, so you always know what to expect.
What should I wear?
Loose, comfortable clothing that can be rolled up above the knee and elbow. You may be asked to remove some clothing for certain points, and you will always be covered with a towel.
Can I have acupuncture alongside other treatment?
Yes, acupuncture is often used alongside conventional care. Please keep taking any prescribed medication and tell me about it at your first appointment. Acupuncture is not a substitute for seeing your GP.
Can I talk to you before I book?
Yes. If you are not sure acupuncture is right for you, you can book a free 15-minute chat. It is a short conversation to help you decide, not a consultation or a full health history.
What do I get after my first appointment?
After your first treatment I send you a written summary of your consultation, explaining what I found in Chinese medicine terms, with a treatment plan.
How much does it cost?
The initial consultation and treatment (up to 90 minutes) is £85. Follow-up treatments (60 minutes) are £65. The 15-minute chat is free.
How do I pay?
Payment is by cash, which I prefer, or by bank transfer. I do not take card payments.
Where are your clinics?
I work from three clinics: 3 Castle Street in Wallingford (OX10 8DL), 3 Way Physiotherapy in Woodley (RG5 4JB), and the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine in Reading (RG1 7SB), on Friday afternoons only.
